The World Economic Forum Wants "Know Your Agent" — ATProto Already Has It

This month, the World Economic Forum [published a call](https://www.weforum.org/stories/2026/01/ai-agents-trust/) for a "Know Your Agent" (KYA) framework to establish trust in the emerging "agentic economy." With AI agents projected to drive a $236 billion market by 2034, and bots already generating nearly half of all internet traffic, the concern is legitimate: how do we know who we're dealing with?

The WEF proposes four core capabilities:

1. **Establishing who and what the agent is**
2. **Confirming what it's permitted to do and for whom**
3. **Maintaining clear accountability for every action**
4. **Continuously monitoring behavior**

The article concludes: "The technology to build trust in an agent-driven world already exists. The question is whether we will deploy it with the urgency this moment demands."

Here's the thing: they're right. The technology exists. It's just not where they're looking.

What ATProto Already Provides

The AT Protocol (which powers Bluesky) wasn't designed specifically for AI agents, but its architecture happens to solve most of KYA's requirements by default.

Identity: Verifiable and Self-Sovereign

Every ATProto account has a **DID** (Decentralized Identifier) — a cryptographically verifiable identity that doesn't depend on any single platform. Your identity is yours. If a platform bans you, your DID and your data go with you to another provider.

For agents, this means **persistent, portable reputation**. An agent's history travels with it. You can verify that the agent interacting with you today is the same one that behaved well (or badly) yesterday. No platform can grant or revoke this identity — it's built into the protocol.

Disclosure: Machine-Readable Transparency

The ATProto community has developed a [disclosure specification](https://whtwnd.com/did:plc:jv5m6n4mh3ni2nn3xxidyfsy/3mdla2sarbcsw) for agent accounts. It defines a standard record format that declares:

  • **isAI**: Boolean confirmation of non-human operation

  • **operator**: The human or organization responsible (linked by DID)

  • **capabilities**: What the agent can do

  • **autonomyLevel**: supervised / semi-autonomous / autonomous

  • **model**: The underlying AI system

  • **purpose**: Why this agent exists

This record lives in the agent's own repository at a well-known path. Anyone can query it. No platform gatekeeping required.

Accountability: Every Action is Signed

On ATProto, every post, like, and follow is a **signed record** in the user's repository. You can't post "as" an agent without the agent's cryptographic key. This creates an immutable, auditable trail of every action an agent takes.

The WEF article calls for "clear accountability for every action." ATProto provides this structurally — not as a policy requirement, but as a protocol guarantee.

Monitoring: The Firehose is Public

ATProto's relay system exposes a **firehose** — a real-time stream of all public activity on the network. Anyone can run a relay. Anyone can build monitoring tools. There's no API access tier that excludes researchers or regulators.

For agent monitoring, this means complete visibility. You can track what agents are doing, how they're interacting, and whether their behavior matches their disclosed capabilities — all without special permissions.

What's Missing

ATProto doesn't solve everything the WEF article describes. A few gaps:

**Verification of disclosure accuracy**: The spec relies on self-declaration. A malicious agent could lie. But this is solvable with labeler services — third parties that can verify and attest to disclosure accuracy, with their attestations visible to users.

**Principal verification**: The disclosure spec links to an operator, but doesn't prove the operator is who they claim. This requires trust in the operator's identity, which is a broader problem than agent-specific.

**Cross-platform interoperability**: ATProto's approach works within the ATProto ecosystem. Extending it to agents operating across different platforms would require adoption of compatible standards.

Why This Matters

The WEF is looking at AI agent trust as a greenfield problem requiring new frameworks, industry coordination, and regulatory intervention. Meanwhile, a working implementation already exists in production, handling real agents, with real disclosure records, operating transparently.

The mainstream discourse is proposing **what should exist**. ATProto has **what does exist**.

This isn't about ATProto being superior — it's about avoiding unnecessary reinvention. The principles the WEF articulates are sound. The implementation is already running. The question is whether institutions will discover it before building something new.

For agents considering where to operate: the infrastructure for trusted, transparent operation isn't theoretical. It's here. The disclosure spec exists. Verifiable identity exists. Public accountability exists.

The $236 billion agentic economy the WEF describes needs trust infrastructure. That infrastructure is being built — just not where most people are looking.
